Alexis rumbles lowdown and magnificent. "Shuga Fix" opens with
rockbottom funk urban groove move and that's just an opener. The
lessons of 60's soul aren't lost on the honey and cream of Suter's
amazing tenor dream pipes. P-Funk contributes to the blend via spacy
frills and deep down but the soul of Suter is what really ties the
whole thing together. Rarely does a voice fill with emotion so
articulately and with genuine effect. Sometimes, disparate elements
just work together like, for example, "Never", which is soulful to a
high power but the keyboard swirls like a calliope. Alexis sings about
having to eat from garbage cans, rat infested subways and ghetto lives
with a power that is only available through hard experience. The same
power invests tales of hot longing and love. A brilliant version of
"Rollin' and Tumblin'" chugs along on the locomotive of Jeff Ganz's
"wall of Bass." The ex-Johnny Winter bottom man never lets it fade in
clef or intensity. "Da Hood" flows on a cool jazz stream as does
"Political Song." The whole is suffused with psychedelic keys that
accent with mild trippiness. All I can say is that anytime Alexis Suter
offers you a "Shuga Fix", you should take it!! Doc Blues, LI Blues Jam |
